The phrases
일, 이, 삼, 사, 오
il, i, sam, sa, o
One to five (Sino)
Korean has TWO number systems. This one came from Chinese and handles anything measured or official.
육, 칠, 팔, 구, 십
yuk, chil, pal, gu, sip
Six to ten (Sino)
십 = ten, so 십일 = eleven, 이십 = twenty. It builds like Lego.
하나, 둘, 셋, 넷, 다섯
hana, dul, set, net, daseot
One to five (Native)
Native Korean numbers. They only go to 99 — above that everyone uses Sino.
여섯, 일곱, 여덟, 아홉, 열
yeoseot, ilgop, yeodeol, ahop, yeol
Six to ten (Native)
여덟 is written with ㅂ but said 여덜. 열 = ten: 열하나 = eleven, and it counts on up to 스물 = twenty.
삼천 원이에요
samcheon wonieyo
It's 3,000 won
천 = thousand. 삼천 = three thousand.
백, 이백, 삼백
baek, ibaek, sambaek
Hundred, two hundred, three hundred
백 = 100 (Sino), and it stacks like 십: 오백 = 500, 삼백오십 = 350. With 천 (1,000) and 만 (10,000) you can read any price tag.
이거 만 원이에요
igeo man wonieyo
This is 10,000 won
만 = ten thousand. It stands alone: 만 원, never 일만 원.
두 개 주세요
du gae juseyo
Two, please
Native numbers CHANGE shape before a counter: 둘 becomes 두. So does 하나→한, 셋→세, 넷→네.
몇 개예요?
myeot gaeyeyo?
How many?
몇 = how many. 개 is the all-purpose counter for objects.
지금 몇 시예요?
jigeum myeot siyeyo?
What time is it?
지금 = now, 시 = hour, 몇 = how many — Korean literally asks "now how many hours is it?"
세 시예요
se siyeyo
It's three o'clock
Hours use NATIVE numbers (셋→세), minutes use Sino. Korean mixes both in one clock time.
일곱 시에 만나요
ilgop sie mannayo
Let's meet at seven
일곱 = seven (native). 에 marks a point in time.
일곱 시 반이에요
ilgop si banieyo
It's half past seven
반 = half, so X시 반 = half past X. Exact minutes use Sino numbers + 분: 일곱 시 십 분 = 7:10. Hours are native numbers, minutes are Sino.
몇 살이에요?
myeot sarieyo?
How old are you?
살 is the counter for years of age, and takes native numbers.
서른 살이에요
seoreun sarieyo
I'm thirty years old
서른 = thirty (native). 스물 = 20, 마흔 = 40.
오늘 며칠이에요?
oneul myeochirieyo?
What's the date today?
Dates use Sino numbers: 오월 십오일 = May 15th.
